Prisma Health not mandating staff get COVID-19 vaccinations

Though other hospitals systems in the Upstate have required COVID-19 vaccinations for employees, Prisma Health, the Upstate’s largest healthcare provider, has not.

The hospital system that covers roughly half of South Carolina has left vaccination to be a choice for staff members, unlike AnMed Health and Self Regional, which mandate vaccination.

“Right now, we’ve elected to let everybody to try and do this on their own,” Dr. Wendell James, Prisma’s chief clinical officer for the Upstate, said during a briefing Thursday. “And we will continue down that path for the time being.”

Prisma declined an interview request when The Greenville News tried to learn more about how many of its employees are vaccinated, what policies are in place for the unvaccinated employees and the reasoning for the private nonprofit hospital system’s choice.
